El compañero de equipo de DOCB de Virar Kohli, Ab de Villiers, trató de disminuir la razón por la que decidió dejar el trabajo de repente
Former Royal Challengers Bengaluru star Ab de Villiers opined that Virat Kohli must have followed his gut feeling and decided to retire from Tests. The ex-India captain dropped a bombshell earlier in May by following Rohit Sharma’s footsteps and ending his 14-year-long Test career. India will now enter an era without the veteran duo of Ro-Ko under the captaincy of Shubman Gill.
de Villiers decodes Kohli’s retirement
As quoted by Times of India, de Villiers claimed that Kohli must have listened to his heart before taking a call on retirement. He noted that Virat had done a lot for cricket over the years and claimed that fans were lucky to still be able to see him play. He added that Kohli will be missed in Tests, pointing out that he had a great legacy in red-ball cricket.
“He must have listened to his heart. He followed his gut feeling. He has done a lot for cricket around the world over the years, and luckily we still see him on the cricket field,” de Villiers said.
“It was time for him”
At a press conference earlier in May, chief selector Ajit Agarkar revealed that Kohli ha reached out to the selectors in April and had informed them about his decision to retire from Tests. He said that Virat no longer felt he could keep up with the standards of the game and hence decided that it was time for him to move on.
“Virat reached out early April & said he had made up his mind (to retire from Test cricket),” Agarkar said during the press conference.
Kohli made his Test debut back in 2011 and has amassed 9230 runs from 123 matches. He averages 46.85 in the longest format of the game. Taking to social media platform, Kohli penned a note announcing his decision to step away from Tests.
