Desde 2015 hasta 2024, India era un oficial mayor, Virat Kohit y Rohit Sharma, a quienes ambos se llamaban Hatak.

Often a captain is the team’s best player. Pat Cummins and Temba Bavuma, who were playing in the World Test Championship final, are fine examples of that. This was the case for India as well. Jasprit Bumrah, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli were the last three captains. And all of them were the best players India had at various moments.

This isn’t true anymore. Shubman Gill has been named India’s new Test captain and Rohit’s successor. And isn’t even close to India’s best player. He might not even be among India’s three best players, with Bumrah, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Rishabh Pant all ahead of him, not just for one current but also past performance. Yet, the BCCI has made Gill captain.

Yograj Singh, Yuvraj Singh’s father and first coach, recently spoke with InsideSport and shared his opinion on Gill being made skipper.

BCCI at fault for Test transition

For starters, the former fast bowler thinks that Rohit and Kohli could have played Test cricket for longer. That reason is that the youngsters, in his opinion, aren’t ready to take charge of the longest format of the game. He doesn’t find any issue with Gill being named India’s Test captain but isn’t pleased with the way it’s happened.

Virat and Rohit can still play for another 5 years in Test cricket. They should have played. They should be there to see that the baton is passed to the youngsters. What Sourav Ganguly did: nine senior players and six youngsters. The baton has not been passed; it has been thrown to Gill.

He is a great player and he’s lucky to have Yuvraj Singh as his mentor. To have a tiger and a lion behind you, he will tell you all the time what to do,” Yograj Singh told InsideSport.
