Bumra fue puesto en India en India en Rohit Assrabia, pero Gill fue elegido como un sucesor.
Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has backed the call to pick Shubman Gill over Jasprit Bumrah as India’s new Test captain. Bumrah was Rohit Sharma’s deputy in the recent Border-Gavaskar Trophy, but Gill was chosen to succeed ahead of the India vs England series. Ponting cited Bumrah’s injury history and backed Gill to fill Rohit’s shoes.
It is the right move: Ponting on Gill over Bumrah as Test captain
Ricky Ponting believes Jasprit Bumrah’s injury issues have held him back from assuming full-time captaincy of the Indian Test team. Shubman Gill will begin his captaincy career with the India vs England series, and Ponting wants India to give him time.
“Bumrah’s injuries are holding him back a bit in the last couple of years and you don’t want that with a captain. You can’t have a captain coming in and missing games here and there, so I think it’s the right decision.” “Now that they’ve made it, it’s one they’ve got to stick with and give him (Gill) a good crack at it for a long period of time,” Ricky Ponting told The ICC Review.
Jasprit Bumrah played all 5 Tests in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy but suffered a stress back fracture in the final Test. He was out of action for 4 months, missing India’s Champions Trophy campaign. The Indian spearhead is unlikely to play all 5 Tests in the India vs England series as well.

Hard to replace experience, India can cope better
Ricky Ponting has first-hand experience of working with Indian talent, having been part of the IPL for the past decade. India are in transition, with Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Rohit Sharma, and Virat Kohli all retired or dropped. While their experience will be tough to maintain, Ponting believes India can do better than the rest.
It’s always very hard to replace players like that, (given) that have been around for so long that have played that much Test cricket. Now even with a young captain with Shubman Gill, they’ll still have some experience around with KL Rahul and Bumrah and these sort of guys. But if you look at a rebuilding sort of phase, India can cope with it better than most other teams,” he added.
