In the match between Puneri Bappa and Raigad Royals, Suraj Shinde made himself part of the internet folklore. Batting first, Bappa set a target of 203 runs, thanks in large part to Shinde’s late-innings burst. The wicketkeeper smashed 40 off just 12 deliveries, with one four and 5 sixes. However, Shinde’s best contribution came behind the stumps.
In the first over of the chase, Suraj attempted to run out Siddesh Veer. Veer tried to sneak in a leg bye after the ball brushed the pads. However, he was sent back, and Shinde effected a direct hit. Veer had reached his crease. The ball nonetheless hit the non-striker’s stumps after a deflection. Harsh Mogaveera was well short of his crease and was given out for a golden duck. What do the rules say?
The rules clearly state that a batter outside his batting crease can be run out at any point when the ball is live. In this case, the ball was not declared dead as Shinde attempted to run out Siddher Veer. Even as Veer was safe, they could have run extra and claimed overthrows had the ball gone anywhere less. To Mogaveera’s misfortune, it landed straight to his stumps, ending his stay.
It was a pivotal moment in the game, and the Raigad Royals never truly recovered from there. They were eventually bundled out for 103, handing Puneri Bappa a 99-run win.
