Chennai Super Kings’ (CSK) struggles this season in the first six overs continued on Friday. Facing the Sunrisers in a do-or-die clash, the CSK top order once again failed to give them a solid start. While the CSK top order over the years has been one of stability, it has been quite the opposite for MS Dhoni’s side in IPL 2025.
CSK top order falls flat, again
It has been a similar story for Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. Their top order has simply failed to catch up with IPL’s fast-growing run-rates. The five-time champions have tried as many as four different opening combinations in IPL 2025, with none resulting in success. At No.3, CSK have tried four more players, with only Ruturaj Gaikwad scoring consistently. Unlucily for CSK, Gaikwad was ruled out of the season due to an injury.
Chennai have tried to address this issue with the addition of Ayush Mhatre to their side. The young 17-year-old has taken the attack to the opposition from the get go. The Mumbai star has struck at 182.35 in his two IPL 2025 games so far. For context, Mhatre has a 34.5% boundary count in the powerplay. All the other CSK players combined have managed to hit a boundary in every 18 deliveries, striking at just 120.

Only once have Chennai Super Kings survived the powerplay without losing a wicket in IPL 2025. In four games, the five-time champions have lost two or more wickets. Their cumulative run rate in the phase is 7.9, a far cry from the standards set in the league. Overall, they have the worst run-rate in the first six overs this season. For reference, SRH and DC are the next worst, and both teams score at 9.27 in the powerplay.
