The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will be suspended for a week, effective immediately. Considering what’s happening on the western borders of India, the country is in no condition to celebrate the IPL festival.

But the one-week suspension has some cricket fans befuddled, not as to why it has been applied, but rather as to what happens when the IPL 2025 indeed resumes. Let’s assume the tournament restarts exactly a week later. What will be the first match once the schedule is re-announced?

The Lucknow Super Giants were supposed to host Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 9. But that match isn’t happening. So, will that be the game that re-kicks the IPL 2025 off? Or will it be Punjab Kings (PBKS) hosting the Delhi Capitals (DC)?

PBKS vs DC match abandoned?

You see, the PBKS vs DC match was called off about 25% into completion. Taking the safety of everyone present at the Dharamsala into account, the BCCI suspended the match. To ensure there is no panic, the official reason for the cancellation was of a floodlight failure.

The question is what happens to this match. The IPL website shows the match was abandoned. As per the MCC’s Law 12.9, a match can be abandoned due to circumstances outside the control of the players and umpires. That fits the bill.

PBKS vs DC match to restart IPL 2025?

This would suggest that PBKS and DC shared one point each. However, that’s not the case. The IPL hasn’t updated the points table despite labelling the game as abandoned. PBKS and DC would have been at the 3rd and 5th spots, irrespective of one point being added or not. But it doesn’t reflect that. Matches played, no result or points; columns haven’t been updated as of May 9. Why is that?

What happened on May 8 was unprecedented. No one could have predicted it. And at that moment, the BCCI and IPL might have decided to label the game abandoned. But PBKS and DC might not be in favour of that ruling. Neither team has qualified for the IPL 2025 playoffs yet. And this match is essential for them to make the final, more so for DC than PBKS.

But even PBKS would like for the match to restart. Considering how well Shreyas Iyer and co. have played, they are looking to end in the top two. That would mean they’ll get two cracks at making the IPL 2025 Final. But a drawn match might take away that opportunity.

The fact that IPL’s own website contradicts itself could suggest that there is a big possibility that BCCI could have the PBKS vs DC match replayed.
