Karun’s Karun Systems
From the highs of his first IPL 2025 game, Karun Nair has landed on the ground with yet another short stint at the crease. Opening the batting, Nair failed to make the most of his start in the LSG vs DC clash on Tuesday. The 33-year-old Vidarbha star was dismissed for a paltry 15 in Delhi Capitals’ chase of 159.
Karun Nair, a one match wonder?
Karun Nair had a dream run in domestic cricket, but had to wait to play his first game for Delhi Capitals. When he did, he took the opportunity in style. Karun smashed a 40-ball 89, taking Jasprit Bumrah to the cleaners. With Faf du Plessis injured and Jake Fraser-McGurk struggling for form, Delhi Capitals seemed to have found a man to solve their opening crises.
However, that high turned out to be short-lived. Karun has since struggled to make a sizeable impact in any of the remaining games. He was out on a duck against Rajasthan Royals, before falling for a 18-ball 31 against Gujarat Titans. On Tuesday against LSG, Karun once again got off to a good start. He smashed back to back boundaries off Shardul Thakur in the first over.
He followed it up with a massive six over long on off Aiden Markram. However, the LSG part-timer had the last laugh. He followed the DC opener, who completely missed the line of the ball and saw it crash into the stumps.
Nair looked extremely disappointed at the manner of his dismissal. The 33-year-old walked back frustrated, with Abhishek Porel at the non-striker end also in shock at the wicket. With du Plessis close to a return and Porel picking form, Nair will need to summon his earlier instincts to get amongst the runs. Karun showed great consistency in the domestic season across formats, but he will need to replicate it during the IPL 2025, for his side to make the playoffs.
