Maharaj can’t hold back tears as SA win WTC

Former South African cricketer Graeme Smith attempted to have a word with an emotional Maharaj following SA’s win. Throughout his interaction with Smith, Keshav struggled hard to fight back tears as he expressed his gratitude to the fans, the people of his country and his teammates.

It’s special, it’s an honour to lift the cup for everyone out here and back home. It’s what the country’s about, the unity among everyone in the last five days. We’re very grateful for everyone here. I think the emotions would’ve spurred me into the right direction had I got into bat. (Message to fans back home) Thanks to everyone who’s been supporting us, through adversity we’ve stood strong. We honour those who’ve come before us, may this be a stepping stone for greater things to come,” Maharaj said.

WTC 2025 final

South Africa found themselves in an extremely comfortable position on Day 4 of the WTC final. Aiden Markram’s hundred and Temba Bavuma’s half-century on Day 3 put the Proteas in the driver’s seat in the run-chase. At the start of play, SA needed just 69 runs to win the Test.

Bavuma (66) was the first to depart on Day 4 as Pat Cummins drew the first blood. Stubbs was the next to depart after he was castled by Mitchell Starc. SA’s WTC final hero Markram (136) attempted to stay till the end to finish off the game for the Proteas but was forced to walk back to the pavilion, thanks to an exceptional catch by Travis Head.

In the end, it was Verreynne and Bedingham who finished the run-chase for South Africa.
