Punjab Kings co-owner Mohit Burman has demanded an extended window for the Indian Premier League (IPL) in order to make it the most watched tournament in the world. PBKS, who reached their second final in IPL 2025, lost to RCB by 6 runs. The PBKS co-owner suggested that while IPL was the second most-watched event in the world, it needed some more time in order to become the most popular in the world.
How can IPL become most popular sports event in the world
Speaking to PTI, PBKS’ Burman pointed out that IPL was just behind NFL in terms of per-match value. However, he suggested that in order to improve the brand value, a 16-18 week window was needed for the cash-rich league to overtake NFL.
“We’re already second in the world when it comes to per-match value, just behind the NFL. But overall brand value? That’s a different game. I think we need a 12-16-week window to get there,” said Burman.
He explained that the extended window will allow better stories to be told, build better rivalries and add more value for everybody. He noted that while IPL already had the scale, it now needed consistency and depth.
“That gives us space to tell better stories, build rivalries, and create more value for everyone – fans, sponsors, broadcasters. But it’s not just about length. It’s about what we do in that time – the kind of content we push out, how we engage fans year-round, how we build the league beyond the season. IPL has the scale. Now it’s about consistency and depth,” he added.
The previous edition of IPL was spanned across over a month and a half, commencing from March 21 and going on till June 3. The league was breifly suspended for a week before resuming again.
