A new revelation has added to the growing controversy around the tragic stampede outside the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, which claimed 11 lives during Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s IPL victory celebration. Hours before the incident, a senior police official had issued a written warning to the government about the risks posed by the event due to inadequate security and crowd control.

The government ignored warnings?

An official letter accessed by The Times of India shows that MN Karibasavana Gowda, the officer in charge of legislature security, had cautioned the Karnataka government on the morning of June 5. The letter, addressed to G Sathyavathi, Secretary of the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms, explicitly raised questions about holding a public felicitation at the Vidhana Soudha.

“RCB has a fan following nationwide, and lakhs of cricket fans will come to Vidhana Soudha if we organise a programme on the grand steps. Since there is a shortage of security personnel, making bandobust arrangements will be a problem,” Gowda warned. Not to mention, a similar report of the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) seeking a nod from the government also came out yesterday.

Despite the red flag, the event was allowed to proceed, culminating in chaos outside the stadium, where not thousands but hundreds of thousands had gathered in response to RCB’s social media invitation. The felicitation inside the stadium continued even after the stampede unfolded.

RCB celebrations: KSCA feeling heat too

The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) is now under immense pressure. On Saturday, Secretary A. Shankar and Treasurer E.S. Jairam resigned, taking moral responsibility for the incident. KSCA president Raghuram Bhat confirmed their resignations were accepted during an emergency meeting.

Though an FIR has been filed against KSCA, Bhat ruled out dissolving the entire managing committee and said the association will cooperate fully with the investigation.
