Year after year, MS Dhoni denies retirement. Most accomplished cricketers leave the sport by their late 30s. Not because their passive has dissipated but because their body isn’t allowing them to continue. Dhoni has been undergoing something similar. For the last couple of years, his knee has been bothering him. But Dhoni continues to fight his body. Why?

Dhoni not retiring for CSK’s sake?

Is it just love of the game? Or does he feel indebted to Chennai Super Kings (CSK)? Yes, he no longer leads the franchise in the Indian Premier League (IPL), but that doesn’t mean that his existence plays a major role in CSK’s importance. CSK is Dhoni and Dhoni is CSK.

This is something former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan believes. Although he didn’t say it, he hinted that Dhoni isn’t announcing his retirement from the IPL because he’s recovering money for the franchise. The wicketkeeper batter knows his best days are behind him but he’s still the face of the brand that CSK is and therefore has responsibility.

“Dhoni is CSK, and CSK is Dhoni. CSK could have been doing good or not alongside Dhoni, but he is still recovering money for the franchise. Dhoni knows that his best days are gone, but he is still playing and facing the criticism. It shows how much attached he is to the franchise,” Wassan said on the Bails and Banter Show.

Dhoni, the captain, failed in IPL 2025?

The former fast bowler doesn’t think that Dhoni deserves any blame for CSK’s campaign this year. Wassan thinks that the team given to Dhoni wasn’t good enough. And his captaincy or leadership can’t be questioned based on the IPL 2025 season.

“A captain is as good as the team he gets; if I give the Zimbabwe team to Clive Lloyd, he won’t be good either. Dhoni’s captaincy should be rated based on the team he got; when he had the team in the past, we all know what he did. In my opinion, captaincy is at times overrated,” Wassan added.
